Why does it seem so difficult to do the simple, small things, daily, that would make our lives better?
Because we are programmed to resist hard and risky things, no matter how small, as a survival mechanism. When we can recognize this, we can make an intentional decision to do those little things, those hard things, and we CAN make our lives better, one “small” thing at a time.
This morning had a difficult component to it. One that almost took away the excitement and fortitude I had when I had woken up, to head out and run. Instead of allowing that survival mechanism in me to kick in and allow me to talk myself out of something I love and out of taking care of myself, I made an intentional decision. An intentional decision to make a small choice to head outside. Instead of starting my run as my feet hit the outdoors like I normally do, I turned on a youtube video titled “The most successful people on the planet” on my phone and I walked, listening to the video and soaking up the beauty of the outdoors.
Soon enough, my feet were hitting the pavement in the run and I felt strong again. I am not here to pretend that life is easy every day, that there aren’t days I don’t want to do the right things, too. BUT, I am here to tell you that it is all a choice. Our reactions and our actions are choices. And unless we make those choices intentional and right, we watch our survival mechanism allow us to stay stuck, to stay unfulfilled.
Make the choice to do the hard thing. Make the choice to do the simple, small things daily, to better your life. The time will pass anyway, you might as well make use out of it to be the best human you can be. For me, I choose this not only for me, but for my beautiful, blue-eyed baby girl. No matter your reason, I promise you that you have one. Do it for that reason. Do it for you.
